Gary Neville brandished Gianluca Scamacca’s first-half yellow card as “lazy” after the striker’s tackle on Marcus Rashford in West Ham United’s defeat at Old Trafford.
The Italian tripped up the England international in the 37th minute and was later substituted in the second half after nearly picking up a second yellow card.
Neville felt the 23-year-old didn’t want to defend the situation which resulted in United being awarded a free kick in a dangerous area.
Neville said on Sky Sports commentary (16:51, 30 October): “He didn’t want to defend, he didn’t want to get low and jockey it. He just wanted to try and pinch it. It’s just lazy from the striker.”
Needs Paqueta back
Scamacca has shown enough in a West Ham shirt to suggest he will be a threat in the future, but he hasn’t been the same player without Lucas Paqueta behind him. Scamacca is not your traditional hold-up striker, he has the ability to play neat flicks and one-touch play, which Paqueta thrives off.
When the Brazilian comes back into the fray, it would not be a surprise to see Scamacca have an uptick in form. Another combination fans would be eager to see is Michail Antonio partnering the striker in a two-pronged attack.
When chasing a game, like the Irons were at Old Trafford, fans would have preferred their main goal threats to remain on the pitch rather than Antonio coming on in a straight swap.
The logic of taking Scamacca off because of his yellow card doesn’t really make sense, with Tomas Soucek remaining on the pitch despite also being on a caution. Let’s hope Paqueta returns soon and Scamacca can rediscover his form.
Moyes has previously been “blown away” by Scamacca’s attributes, so the Italian is sure to be given more chances from the Scot, even when things aren’t going to plan.
