Fans baffled by Thiago Alcantara's odd injury as Liverpool star misses Forest clash

Fans have been left baffled by Thiago Alcantara's odd injury as the Liverpool star misses their clash with Nottingham Forest.

The Spanish midfielder is absent from the Reds' trip to the City Ground on Saturday, with Fabinho, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott starting for Jurgen Klopp's side in midfield. Ahead of the match, Klopp confirmed Thiago would not be playing a part against Forest as he is suffering from an ear infection.

Whilst speaking ahead of kick-off, Klopp gave further details on the injury, revealing that Thiago "got a bad ear infection overnight. The decision was made at 5.15am."

However, fans have been left confused by the reason Thiago misses out, with one tweeting: “Not sure this would get me out of PE, let alone a Premier League game.”

Another worried supporter added: “We are finished big time.” A third wrote: “Ear infection like... god forbid these fellas ever got a cut on the finger, they’d be out for weeks!”

One more Reds fan also commented: “We can’t catch a break.” Another took to Twitter to write: “At least it’s not a muscle injury.”

Thiago has struggled with a string of injuries since arriving at Anfield from Bayern Munich in 2020 and has already missed 50 matches through injury.

Those include six games earlier this season after he was sidelined with a hamstring problem. Despite his fitness issues, Thiago has already made 10 appearances across all competitions this season, taking his overall tally for the club to 79.

He is not the only absentee for Klopp and Liverpool on Saturday, with Darwin Nunez also missing out with a muscle problem.

SEARC SHARE TWEET BeyondWords Sunderland have been struggling without a recognised striker since mid-September, but head coach Tony Mowbray was bolstered last weekend with the return of Ellis Simms from injury. The Black Cats suffered two doses of cruel misfortune two months ago – firstly with talisman Ross Stewart pulling up in the warm-up before facing Middlesbrough with a quad injury, and then just a over a week later it was Simms’ turn to be struck down. The toe injury that Simms suffered was only supposed to keep him out for a few weeks, but it ended up being much longer than that – over six weeks of action was missed and in that time, Sunderland won just one league match and started to slide down the table as a result.
